Things to Do in Waynesville, Missouri for Couples: A Local’s Guide
By Alex Bradford Cobb | Published: 9/21/26 | Last updated: 9/21/26
Waynesville is a better couples destination than most people expect from a small Route 66 town in the Missouri Ozarks. The combination of historic downtown streets, a cold freshwater spring with a local legend attached to it, good food and beer, river floats through limestone bluffs, and the Route 66 Neon Park glowing at dusk gives couples more to work with than the size of the town would suggest.
Here’s the honest guide to Waynesville for couples — plus 10 minutes west, where the fudge and mini golf are.
Uranus Fudge Factory & General Store: 14400 Hwy Z, St. Robert, MO 65584 | Open daily 8 AM – 8 PM (CST) | 10 minutes west of Waynesville
The Waynesville Couple’s Day
Start: Roubidoux Spring

Take a dip, just watch out for those Amoebas I keep hearing about.
The cold, clear freshwater spring at Laughlin Park is the right place to begin a couple’s day in Waynesville. The paved trail from Roubidoux City Park to the spring is an easy, scenic walk along the creek — 20 minutes, genuinely beautiful, and free. Local legend says that if you dip your toes in the spring water, you’ll return to Waynesville. Most couples find this worth testing.
The trail passes the Trail of Tears Cherokee Campsite — a National Park Service interpretive site that gives the walk more historical weight than a typical morning stroll.

Morning: Walk the Historic Square

The cannon still works. You can just shoot it. No one can stop you; you have a cannon!
The Waynesville downtown square is compact enough to walk in an hour and dense enough to fill it. The 1903 Courthouse — one of only two remaining period courthouses on the Missouri Route 66 alignment — is the architectural anchor. The Route 66 shield on the courthouse grounds (8 feet tall, installed for the 2026 Centennial) is the photo op. The surrounding storefronts have local boutiques, the Route 66 Community Art Gallery, and coffee if you need it.
The Historic Talbot House is worth a stop if it’s open — a fully restored 19th-century home with a guide who knows the town’s history and has a hand-cranked drum piano inside. The combination of good storytelling and an unexpected musical instrument is better than it sounds.
Afternoon Option A: Float the Big Piney or Gasconade

This is one of those rivers that flows North-to-South, AKA most of them!
A river float is the best couple’s afternoon in Pulaski County. BSC Outdoors runs canoe, kayak, and tube trips on both the Big Piney and the Gasconade — the 5-mile Big Piney float through Devil’s Elbow is the one that most couples come back for. The 200-foot limestone bluffs, the clear water, and the 1923 Route 66 bridge overhead make it the most scenic two hours you can spend in Pulaski County.
The 3-mile Gasconade tube float is the easier afternoon option if you want something more relaxed.

Afternoon Option B: Putt Pirates Mini Golf at Uranus

Right after this pic, he sent one sailing into the parking lot and thru a mother of four’s windshield
10 minutes west on Hwy Z, Putt Pirates is the right competitive couple’s afternoon. $10 per person (tax included), 18 holes, pirate theme, and a secret river shortcut on certain holes that can set up a hole-in-one. Whoever finds the shortcut first wins a competition running alongside the main score, and the stakes — loser buys ice cream — work perfectly since Uranus Ice Cream Co. is steps away.
Set the stakes before you start. Find the shortcut. Win gracefully or lose graciously.
14797 Hwy Z, St. Robert, MO 65584 | Mon–Thu 11 AM – 8 PM, Fri–Sun 11 AM – 9 PM | $10 adults (tax included)
Late Afternoon: Devil’s Elbow

I love bridges. The indomitable human spirit overcoming rivers.
Whether you floated it or not, Devil’s Elbow is worth the 20-minute drive west for a couple who wants the best scenic stop in Pulaski County. The 1923 steel truss bridge over the Big Piney River at the sharpest bend in the river — 200-foot limestone bluffs rising above, the original Route 66 alignment running through — is the kind of place that makes a couple stop talking and just look for a minute.
Drive across it. Park. Walk back. The view from the bridge looking up at the bluffs is the one.

Evening in Waynesville
Dinner: Ursula’s Schnitzelhaus or Hoppers Pub

A great place to grab a bite to eat. Or multiple bites!
The two best dinner options in Waynesville for couples are different enough that the choice tells you something about the couple.
Ursula’s Schnitzelhaus is the date-night pick — authentic German cuisine in a small Missouri Ozarks town is the kind of discovery that makes a dinner feel like an event. The schnitzel is the move. It’s the most distinctive restaurant in the county and the one that makes Waynesville’s food scene worth talking about.
Hoppers Pub is the comfortable pick — 66 beers on tap, Route 66 memorabilia everywhere, consistently well-reviewed food, and the best bar atmosphere in Pulaski County. The right choice for a couple who wants a good burger, a great beer selection, and an evening without formality.
Hoppers Pub: 318 Historic Route 66 E, Waynesville, MO 65583 | (573) 774-0135
After Dinner: Route 66 Neon Park at Dusk

This sign is filled with Neon, a Noble Gas. It looks noble, doesn’t it?
The Route 66 Neon Park in George M. Reed Roadside Park — right next to Uranus in St. Robert, 10 minutes west — is the best free thing to do in Pulaski County after dark. Restored vintage neon signs from defunct Route 66 motels and businesses, lit from dusk to midnight, in an oak grove along the historic alignment.
Come at dusk. The signs come to life as the light fades and it’s genuinely beautiful — the kind of stop that turns a good evening into a memorable one.

The Overnight Option
If you’re making a Waynesville weekend of it rather than a day trip, St. Robert has over 20 hotels within a few miles of Waynesville — see Where to Stay Near Uranus Missouri for the full guide. The Roubidoux Spring local legend about returning to Waynesville gives you a built-in reason to book a second night.
A two-day couple’s itinerary:
Day 1: Roubidoux Spring trail → Historic Square → Putt Pirates mini golf → Uranus Ice Cream → Route 66 Neon Park at dusk
Day 2: Big Piney float through Devil’s Elbow → lunch at Hoppers Pub → Historic Talbot House → dinner at Ursula’s Schnitzelhaus
We had a couple swing by last week on a romantic date and they smooched in the parking lot.
